How do I get into my internet browser preferences?

I keep getting a black screen when I go to play my games on shockwave. I wrote to them and they wrote back: "Please make sure Java/JavaScript and Cookies are enabled in your Internet browser's preferences." I can't figure out how to get into my internet browser preferences to check my Java. Can anyone please tell me? Thank-you. I am using Internet Explorer. The only things under content are: content advisor certificates auto complete feeds

1. Click on Tools/options/content; this should show the Java enabled status. Without knowing what browser you are using cant give you anymore than that.
