Is there a way for average programmer to earn a good salary in Open Source industry?

I see many ads about great Open Source opportunities everywhere, but what are the ways of getting money, if the software is free?

4. even if you use open source software, in many cases you are free to modify and sell open source software depending on the type of license used. if you are a programmer and want to build an open source application you could also have a free version and also a premium version that some people would pay like sugarcrm and many other companies do.
